How come Compress still ask for stiffening rings (per Appendix 1-8) near the junctures of a toriconical transition? I thought stiffening rings or added reinforcements are NOT required as long as the knuckle radius meets ASME Code requirements.

I am using Build 6247.

Paragraph UG-33(g) requires that when the knuckle-to-cylinder juncture is a line of support for external pressure, the moment of inertia at the juncture shall be provided in accordance with Appendix 1-8.

Thus for case of a knuckle, there is no requirement for additional reinforcing area but the requirements for stiffness (moment of inertia) of the juncture must be met.
