Hello All,
I encounter an old military drawing with dim 4" type
how would interpret the tolerance if template state fraction ±1/32 , .xxx ±.010
Would this consider be "open tolerance" and is there limits to this?

please advise

Consider it fraction, otherwise it would be 4.0, 4.00, 4.000

You're lucky there IS a fraction tolerance to refer to.

No one believes the theory except the one who developed it. Everyone believes the experiment except the one who ran it.

i'm still disputing it and i consider that "open" tolerance
in addition, by definition of a fraction or whole number is not a fraction. book and dictionary states that.
Therefore the fraction tolerance should not be applied in this case.

Open Tolerance, i could not find any reference on this term as well.
It's merely just to ease manufacturing which perhaps the feature is not critical.

I have a part that our QA is rejecting the part, and i'm opposing due to this issue.
The drawing was made in 1966 and was for Military use.

It doesn't have a decimal point, therefore it falls under the fractional tolerance. I've never seen a 4 & 0/32" dimension.

I'm confused by the "type" you show after the 4" in the OP. Is "type" part of the dimension? Is that supposed to be "typ" as in typical?

The Help for this program was created in Windows Help format, which depends on a feature that isn't included in this version of Windows.

In the absence of a formal dimensioning and tolerancing standard such as ASME[ ]Y14.5, you need to ask yourself what the old drafter intended.
