I am a previous AI that is now a QC manager. I am reviewing our WPS/PQR and certs and noticing a lot of trouble. We qualified our procedures to ASME section IX, but do very little Code welding. I am curious about welding consumable choices. I have not ever had to ensure suitablility of rods before. I know the basics, but any extra tips to ensure we are meeting customer requirements would be a great help. I am well versed with all ASME codes, but not all that well versed with AWS.

ASME SEction II, Part C is an excellent source. In the appendix of each SFA (which is a direct AWS copy), they give specifics about each classification of electrode.

The choice of welding filler metals for welding similar metals should be such to ensure near matching chemistry and mechanical properties with the base materials to be joined.

Talk to the consumable suppliers and build a technical relationship with them. Review how you purchase and certify welding consumables. Build a welding literature library.
