Hi,
I am trying to model a timber-concrete composite beam, which I've taken from an existing TCC bridge.
I'm trying to follow what the engineers stated in the journal:
"The structural analysis of the bridge deck was done using two dimensional
(2D) finite-element method (FEM) models run in the
finite elements software package SAP 20001 (CSI, 2004). The
timber and concrete components were modeled using simple
beam-type finite elements assuming linear elastic behavior in
both cases. The timber–concrete connection is modeled with six
degree of freedom linear spring elements, connecting two existing
nodes (one on timber and another on concrete) allowing deformation
in the longitudinal axis of the beam while the deformations
in the other two directions were restrained, as well as all
rotations. These conditions will enforce the same curvature in
both layers and avoid vertical discontinuity.
I started off with a truss and used beam elements for the concrete slab, timber beam and shear connectors. in staad I've defined the connection as steel rods with the start and ends having 6DOF with the global x direction given a slip modulus of 200kN/mm. I've also made the top and bottom beams ridged in the y direction but when I run analysis the beam completely fails and there is no sign of shear in the x direction?
