Does anyone know how to calculate the thrust force acting on a bearing used for a screw conveyor?

I talked to our old screw conveyer guru and he said that he designed for all the force the prime mover could input to the screw shaft. He tried to keep the thrust off the intermediate of hanger bearings.
He would typically limit the amount thrust by some type of decoupling device to keep from damaging a locked screw.
