Threading Cylender 2

I am trying to thread a cylinder in solid edge V18 however it expects me to come up with the perfect diameter rather than me just chosing a thread size. When I thread a hole I am able to select for example a 6-40 thread and it will size the hole respectively. How can I thread the cylinder?

Thanks,
-Tom

Tom,

to cut a thread on a shaft the shaft must match exactly the
nominal diameter of the thread and that's the way SE works.
To have a metric thread say M10 to be cut the shaft must
be exact 10mm in diameter. SE will give you the choice
to choose one of the suitable threads that will fit.

For a threaded hole SE combines the drilling of the hole
with cutting the thread in one function. You may, however,
choose to use the cutout function to create the hole
and later on apply the thread. In this case your pre-cut
hole must match exactly the 'internal minor diameter' that
is the second column in holes.txt.
To stay in the picture: for an M10 (coarse) thread the pre-cut
hole must be exact 8.376mm in diameter.

See the description in holes.txt too, especially when ist
comes to tapered threads

tcoletta,

If you do this often it would be worthy of your time to copy the holes.txt file. Unless you've moved it this file is located under c:\Programs\Solid Edge V??\Program folder. Paste it into Excel and give the columns some meaningful headings.

Create threaded cylinders for your commonly used threads and add them to a feature library.
Then you can drag and drop them onto models as required, and modify the parameters for cylinder/thread extent etc.
I've done it for counterbored holes - it's much easier than looking up values every time.
