I was wondering how exactly does a thinner head gasket effect directly increase the compression ratio of an engine

Compression is based upon area of "free" volume (area not touched by the piston stroke) being squashed by the volume the piston rides through, right? So, reduce the "free" volume (by thinning the gasket)... eventually you get to a "free" volume of zero, which means the piston ride-through volume will have an infinite compression as the piston completes its stroke.

And usually so insignificant it's not worth worrying about.

It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts. (Sherlock Holmes - A Scandal in Bohemia.)

With the head gaskets of today, they are so thin that there is nowhere to go.
Many years ago, when head gaskets were much thicker, it was a common hot rod trick to boost the compression ration with after market, thin, head gaskets.
