A shell element has 6 degrees of freedom at each node, or more commonly 5 degrees as the in-plane torsional stiffness is assumed to be infinite. as such moment loads can be applied to freedoms 4 and 5 as well as direct loads to the first three freedoms at each node. Tetraherdral elements, or any solid 3 element, only have the translational degrees of freedom and as such only direct loads/forces can be applied to each node. To apply a moment, equal and opposite forces have to be applied to at least 2 separate nodes.
