I wish to test an electric motor on a dynamometer facility. The motor is
3 Phase Vertical Synchronous Induction Motor with Top mounted Exciter (with interpoles VAX control). The motor uses liquid resistance starters for induction motor starting and uses 6.6KV CT's to supply a DC rectifier which in turn feeds DC to the Field windings. How do i go abouts testing this motor. The motor details are:

Motor Make: AEI Ltd
Type: Synchronous Induction
Frame Size: TAVW 168132
Power: 525 HP (361.8kW)
Speed: 333rpm
Voltage: 6600V

The load simulation systems (including regulated brake and torquemeter) for such high power 525HP from well known manufacturers as Magtrol, Huco and Himmelstein, are very expensive. The thermal model based method of motor SOA testing maybe suggested. This method was designed by R.H.Welch Jr., well known motor designed and expert. You may contact him directly: (rhwelch@stthomas.edu).

Your main problem is the vertical construction. Find a laboratory equipped with a dynamometer for vertical motors. The motor could start no loaded with the rotor induction winding short-circuited and test only the full load condition under synchronous speed . The complete set of excitation devices will be required in order to provide adequate field excitation.
