We currently have a problem with H2S in a long sewer force main and have started injecting Ferrous Chloride to possibly stop the h2s formation.
My question is, what is the best way to test for h2s in sewage?
I am currently using a Hach comparative test that is very inaccurate.

We have found the Hach Sulfide test kit works very well. It gives you a multiplier to convert the results into aquous H2S. It is much more accurate than the kit you are currently using.

Assuming that you have stabilized the sample if taking to a lab or testing on-site, my experience with the H2S levels at our plant is that it is very erratic. Therefore any one reading is only a snapshot in time at best. I don't know if you have the same type of erratic H2S levels at your plant. In either case, you may want to use the field test as a screening tool and take an occassional sample for lab testing that you can use to correlate to the field test samples.
