I have a project where we are rehabilitating an existing bridge and deciding whether we can keep the existing multi-column piers. The bridge was built in the mid 1960's and the existing plans specify Intermediate, or Hard grade reinforcement. The client has requested that we test rebar to determine what grade was used. We are removing some parts of the piers, so we have concrete and rebar samples for testing. Does anyone know an ASTM, ACI or AASHTO spec for sampling and testing rebar from existing structures?

I don't think anything would exist for testing rebar from existing structures. Just try and get a few decent portions of rebar and send them to a lab.

OK, thanks. I found a spec for testing existing concrete and thought there might be a companion for existing rebar.

Before cutting, check with lab to be sure it is sufficient length.

If you are planning on welding any of the older reinforcement you may also need tests to determine the chemistry to see if it is in fact weldable.

Though if you are able to establish the general grade of reinforcement and have access to the original standards under which this reinforcement was specified you may be able to determine this directly from the standard.

The folks doing the testing should be able to advise on the standards/specifications under which to conduct the tests.
