I have heard the term "seismic" transducer used in discussion of monitoring of rotating machinery.

Is a seismic transducer the same as an accelerometer?

Nice reference Greg. Nothing here to argue with. Pete, I think with regards to using the term seismic for vibration sensors associated with machinery vibration monitoring and analysis, most people are simply trying to differentiate between absolute measurements (made on casings and housings of machinery) that use accelerometers and velocity sensors and relative measurements (made within a bearing housing to measure relative movement of the shaft) that use non-contact eddy current displacement probes or shaft riders. I guess the grey area is when a shaft rider is used that is equipped with a velocity sensor or accelerometer. It is still measuring relative motion, but is doing it with a seismic sensor!
