I need to provide an assessment of temporary stability for a cut in predominantly cohesive material. The cut is a temporary works solution, to enable a gravity wall to be constructed and the cut subsequently backfilled.

I understand the need to assess the stability in terms of total stress for the short term, using modelling software. However, am unsure how to go about determining the length of time the cut can remain open until drained conditions prevail.

I'd be happy to hear suggestions as well as any general comments regarding slope stability for temporary works as a whole.
