Suppose manager of a project send a message of TeamStatus for a fixed duration activity, and the resource replies he has completed a part of work. When manager updates project, duration of activity doubles. Why?

Example:
activity with duration 8 days
manager send message of teamstatus
reply is: work completed = 7 days, work remaining = 1 day
after updating project, duration=16, while it would be more logical a duration of 9 days.

I've seen durations change because I changed the Units % (found under Resource tab when bring up Task Information). While sometimes I purposely do this to reflect reality (i.e., person working 2 projects), perhaps a data entry mistake was made with the wrong tab being displayed?
