Tank Chime Area 2

What is the preference for the gaps that exist between the chime extension and the concrete ring wall? We currently have caulked and grouted gaps on several tanks but I don't see it mentioned in API 650 or 653. Tank built in 1951 per API 650. The gaps are 1/4" and vary in length around the perimeter of the tank.

The more common practice is putting expansion joint material under the shell when built, wouldn't normally be done to an existing tank. Sealing that area with caulking material, I don't think is mentioned, but is not uncommon. The motivation is to keep rainwater from running back under the tank.

Use non-shrink equipment grout. Tanks change diameter a lot when heating up from cold & empty, to In-Service and warm. The caulking just tears loose and leaks.
