Hi all,

I am running a dell x64 system with SW x64. i am having serious stability issues with this version. If i run x32 version SW will it take advantage of the 8gb of RAM i have? Thanks in advance!

Mitsu50,

What version of SWx64 are you running. I'm currently running 2008 SP3.0 and have seen better stability than I ever saw with my x32 system. I'm told that a x32 app should be able to use the full RAM of an x64 system, it just won't be able to use the full page file. I'm not certain of that claim however.

An x32 system will only be able to use 4GB RAM, and unless you have the /3GB switch enabled the max RAM SW can use will be approx 1.6GB.

Correction;
You should NOT use the /3GB switch on x64 Windows. It could actually limit the available RAM to 3GB.

The x64 OS should be able to access the 8GB but SWx32 will only be able to access approx 1.6GB RAM.

Currently, most commercial software is built as 32-bit code, not 64-bit code, so it can't take advantage of the larger 64-bit address space or wider 64-bit registers and data paths on 64-bit processors, or, on x86 processors, the additional registers in 64-bit mode.

I stand corrected, serves me right for trusting the amateur IT guy.

Thanks for the replys guys. i am running SP3.1, and the biggest problem is performance. It seems to run sluggish, and also the main crashes are when i do a document inquiry from PDM vault to view a drawing without have to open the actual files. I can do it once. but if i try again it either shows and empty white screen or that some temp file cannot be located. If i close the window, and try to view another file, SW just crashes, and this can be repeated precisely. my VAR has made an inquiry but nothing back from SW yet.

Update, i wiped everyting out and re-installed X64 SW SP0.0, and all is better as far as stabiltity goes, PDM and edrawing still happens..... :( My VAR sugested SP2.1, thoughts?

I've never had the e--drawings feature from the vault work with any measure of stability. It's quicker and amazingly enough, less resource intensive, for me to open a read only copy of the model in question and look at the details I need to see.

Mitsu50,

Check your network speed, at my last job they had gigabit netwoks and we never had any problems with eDrawings from the PDMWorks vault.

At my current job, we only have 100 Mbp network setup and there are some problems with using eDrawings from the PDMWorks vault.

I will check into the network speed as a potential issue! thanks!

Hi

We have been updating our hardware and I was wondering about this /3GB switch (CorBlimeyLimey): Where do I find it in SW?

Quote:"An x32 system will only be able to use 4GB RAM, and unless you have the /3GB switch enabled the max RAM SW can use will be approx 1.6GB."

We're running x32 system and updated our hardware to 4GB RAM.

Thanks!

Thank you for the quick reply!

It works, though I haven't checked the actual performance.
