Are the cables or chains used to suspend loads or platforms required to be designed as lifting equipment? In other words, do you have to use chain or cable that is designated "for lifting" or can you use chain or cable that is "not for lifting" but is used within the chain's or cable's published working load limit? Is there a code or rule for this? For instance, 1/2" Grade 70 transport chain is "not for overhead lifting" but it has a working load limit of 11,300 pounds in the NACM manual. Can it be used to suspend a platform that is walked on and under during construction or maintenance?

As is usual, OSHA alludes to things but is not very specific. Ignore OSHA for this question: Can you justify holding up people with a device that is specifically NOT certified to hold up misc. junk? Didn't think so.
Look at wire rope, 3/8" or 1/2", using Crosby Clips to terminate the ends. This method is pretty much 'industry standard' for platforms and misc. rigging [including holding up people].
