Hi,

Can anyone help me with how to size a sump? I have searched extensively for this and the only things that come up have to do with aquariums and aquatics.

So, how do I size a sump? What volumes do I use? Low level of all the vessels?

Also, how do you decide between an open or closed drain? I saw a P&ID with an open drain but it still had a vent. Isn't an open drain supposed to be open? If so, a vent shouldn't be required. I will appreciate any help I can get.

You can size the sump for whatever size that you want. If it is for general service, you need to size the sump so that it has room for the pump.

There may be situations when you need to size the sump for a batch dump from a reactor. If the process sewer does not have adequate capacity, than you need to size the sump accordingly.

You need to do a PSM to determine the hazards and environmental aspects.

If you have chemicals that will contribute to fugitive emissions or a fire hazard, then you need a cover. Sumps for water do not need covers.
