Hi guys. I have a couple questions about ANSI/HI Standard 9.8-2012. I am unsure as to exactly what the standard applies to, and how one would apply it.
1) Is this standard for the pump, or the system? Or both? For example, does it only apply to the design of the pump suction bell or volute, or does it also apply to the design of the suction system, e.g. a suction piping header/lateral system, or a suction vault/pit for a pump on suction lift?
2) What does the standard do that normal good standard engineering practice doesn't? For example, if I follow good established practice for design of my suction system (e.g. 3 ft/s max velocity in suction laterals, top flat reducers, 5-7 diameters straight pipe upstream of the suction flange, etc.), what would I learn or improve by using the HI standard?
3) The standard seems to be calling for CFD analysis for suction design. In almost 30 years of doing pump stations I have never heard of this. What would a CFD analysis do that good standard practice can't do? Are they asking for CFD in lieu of a standard hydraulic model?
Hopefully someone here has experience with this. Thanks in advance for your help! Pete
