Submersible Pump Cabling

We have submersible pumps with 28" lead wires. The problem is that we do not have drop cables for them.

I would like to know what type of cable would be suitable for submersible applications? Can I use a TECK cable?

Are there splice kits for a 3 core cable to 3 x 1C wires?

Yes you can get waterproof splice kits at lots of places. Try Grainger.com.

TECK = Canadian sort of equivalent to CLX (see Okonite).

Generally we specify the cable to come with the motor, at a length suitable for wet well immersion. I don't think Teck cables are typical for this application, more like SO cables.

NEC 501.140 B 6 stipulates continuous length (no splices) although A 3 allows extension beyond the wet pit.

Cable manufacturers make specific submersible pump cable. Generally it is only sold to pump mfrs because it needs a sealing arrangement that usually ends up being integral to the pump housing. But if you can find out who's cable your pump OEM is using, you can probably buy it from someone and fashion your own.

You can go to any irrigation or pump outlet and they will have "well cable". Often it looks like really stout large gray Romex.

Our contractor managed to get both cable and splice kit from a retail hardware store. I have not seen the specifications yet but informed them to pre-approve it before installation. They claim it is also CSA approved.

I'm just wondering why such is not available on the standard 3M catalog and the 3M agent took such information from 3M manufacturing with some caution...and this is available from a hardware store?

There are millions of wells in the world. They all need splices. A well spice kit costs $6 at Grainger. All well/irrigation stores have them. They are nearly trivial. A couple of crush ferrules and some melt-wall heat shrink tubing.

I would expect you to be able to get them at Sears. In the right places possibly even at 7-eleven..
