I got a question on weld plates on a typical cmu bldg. How important is the bearing plane of the weld plate concerning the setting of red iron beams and k joist. Is this a critical variable. I been raising hell about the weld plate not being level, when the beam goes in, there a void under the beam. One today had at least 90% void under it. The erection crew doesnt seem to think this is a deal breaker, they just weld up the sides. Then the beam is sitting on the weld and not the bldg weld plate.
Its the same with the k joist, they go in crooked because the cmu crew cant set a weld plate to save their lives, erection crew refuse to shim.
My question from the structural engineer view, do I have the right to complain about the levelness or is it no big deal?
