We are thinkng of transfering isopentane from iso container to an internal floating roof storage tank, and to store it. In Middle East, as you know the ambient temperatures are very high, and the isopentane boiling point is 27.8°C, we are thinking of providing chiller and maintain the tank inside temperature at say 20°C by circulating the chiller outlet stream to tank. I would like to know how to calculate the heat gain by an insulated vertical storage tank from ambient conditions. Consider Ambient temperature as 50°C. Actually I would like to calculate the chiller load after calculating the heat gain by the storage tank.

Appreciate if some one help me in this.

Thanks.

I would start with Q = UA(delta T) and see if you can make that work. I'm not sure if solar radiation is significant at 50oC, but if it is, you'll have to add a radiation term to the right hand side.

Good luck,
