I dont have much experience in stacks need some help. I have a client that has asked me to develop some thicknesses for a few stacks and they are specified to be made from A242 and the design temp is 750°F. Stack has no insulation and no refractory and the datasheet does not specify any liner. The scope of the project at this time is to get enough info for an estimate.
Questions:
1. It appears that A588 is a preferred material in the same material class. Is A588 a good substitute or replacement for A242?
2. If the design temp for an open top stack is 750° and its not insulated or lined, should you use the material yield strength at 750°F to develop the strength capacities per the STS-1 equations?
A) I have had lots of trouble finding elevated temp properties for this material. If anyone has it, please share. I have tried to contact the manufacturer ( US Stainless Steel) but haven't had any luck.
B) I would expect the inlet to the stack to be at or near the operating temp and there to be a thermal gradient going up the stack. But the inlet would have a large bending moment and be at some elevated temp. Whats the process for selecting the design conditions at this location...please dont say thermal FEA!
EDIT: I am using PVElite for the design and it doesn't have either of these materials in it.
