We recently received a copy of Table C.1 "Normalized values of rolling stock impact strength" from the Russian code SP 16.13330.2011. In the table it refers to "Steel characteristic strength". Does anyone know if this is referring to yield strength or ultimate strength or something else? I'm trying to figure out which category ASTM A1085 steel would fit in that table.

Dear DOZER,
I suspect there are some wrong translations... for example "Normalized values of rolling stock impact strength" and "Steel characteristic strength" not sure i understand correctly although i am familiar with SNIPS , and Russian Language .

I will suggest you to look SNIP II-23-81. Table 51 to see the properties of common steels.

The symbols Ry and Ru are used for yield and ultimmate strength.

The following excerpt from the same to show the notation ..

Pls post the copy of Table C.1 or at least some excerpt to get better responds..

Good Luck..

Hi HTURKAK,
I suspected these were rather poor translations. That's a shame because I've looked into buying a translation of SP 16.13330.2011 and it's around $600 (US). Here's the table.

What does the Greek letter gamma represent in the table you attached?

Dozer,

I believe there is a group within Eng-Tips for translation assistance. Might be worth a try.

Greek letter gamma represent material reliability factor ..which shall be determined with section 3.2 of SNIP II-23-81.

The table that you post shows the rolled steel impact energy requirements and the STEEL CHARACTERISTIC STRENGTHS are yield strength.
If you know ( should know ..) the design temperature range and structure group, i may propose the allowable materials..Regarding the group of structure, you may look table 50 of SNIP II-23-81.

Good luck..

Thanks HTURKAK. I don't have SNIP II-23-81. We're a US company that does very little work in Russia. We think they will accept US steel if we meet the impact requirements. That's why I needed to understand Table C.1. I can move forward with the help you've given. Thanks again.
