This is an apparently simple question which is proving difficult to get an answer to!

We have some platework under stress at an elevated temperature. Our mechanical engineer has given an allowable stress value based on an ASME code assuming steel grade A656 - which I think is an ASTM designation?

We will need to buy this platework in Europe, and would ideally like the European equvalent grade. Does anyone know the equivalent EN steel grade? (or indeed if there is one!).

Try posting this in the Materials Engineers, Metal and Metallurgy engineering section. Most of the guys who know materials stuff use that board.

Corus list the grades and properties of european steel here

Hope this helps a little, you will be able to compare between the european and american standards.

A656 appears to be 550Mpa yield strength and 620Mpa ultimate tensile strength. Which at first glance appears to be similar to S550 (on page 7)

Though I would suggest phoning their techincal guys who should know exactly which grade you require.
