I do some work for a manufacturing company, one of the overhead cranes used is supported by two steel beams hung from the ceiling.

This crane rolls along the length of the beams.

The cross-section of the beam is 6" depth, 3 3/8" flange, 3/16" web and 5/16" average flange thickness (measured without calipers, just a measuring tape). The profile suggests an S shape but the closest I can find in the charts is a S6x12.5. This shape has thicker web and flange. Is there a better way to identify this beam?

Thanks

It is probably an older type of beam. If you know the rough age of the structure AISC may be able to help you with the type and with what strength steel to expect.

I think it probably is supposed to be an S6x12.5. It is hard to accurately measure those beams. Your dimensions are 1/16 shy of the nominal dimensions in both web thickness and flange thickness. Probably rolled on a Friday or Monday.
