Hi, can someone please tell me what is the applicable standard for testing old rebar that we are pulling out of a building we are trying to rehabilitate? I think it is A 370 (Test Methods and Definitions for Mechanical Testing of Steel Products), but I don't want to purchase it just to find out its not the right one.

Also, if anyone has any advice regarding testing old rebar, specifically what length we need to harvest, that would also be appreciated.

FYI, it is a two way roof slab. We are planning on taking the steel (and some cores for f'c determination) from the middle strips of the slabs.

Thanks

You need to get ahold of a local materials testing company. You should be able to find one in a major city in your area.

ASTM A615 is the standard for Deformed and Plain Billet-steel Bars for Concrete Reinforcement. You don't say "how old" - may have to go back several decades to find the version of ASTM A615 that applied at the time of the original construction.
