Hi all.
I am currently trying to repair a shell area on a SS storage tank. Cracks were found upon a 10yr inspection where it looks as though stiffeners were welded to the shell to keep the round while they welded on the cone during fabrication. These stiffeners were then removed and it may have caused some scaring. They welded these areas to hide the scars. This is what we think happened; I have no history. Other than that theory, it really looks like six 2" nozzles were removed and patches were installed from the inside. Here we are today with stress cracks present. I had welders grind into it to try to remove the cracks. Welders wound up grinding all the way through. The shell material is 1/4" Areas are 2" diameters. I can put lap patches per 653. Is there anything that I should be aware of before I do this? Also, now that they cut all the way through, should I attempt to fix this area with weld metal first, then apply lap patch? Also, I have one area that is near a weld seam junction. Code says I can go over the welds as long as I overlap the weld by X amount of inches. Does this sound correct?
