Hello

This is my first posting so please be patient. My question evolves the evaluation of the mobile gantry crane (on rollers) and making sure I have adequate base, thus preventing “tipping”. How can I determine a minimum length of the base members?

Thanks

Do a static analysis for the most extreme case. That will be the heaviest load at the greatest distance from the center or neutral position. Allow for dynamic loads if the load can move easily. There are probably some good references and examples on the internet. You might find some on a German site. In the US Morrow Cranes is about the only manufacturer I know of.

Hope this helps a little.

One thing to keep in mind is load testing of the cranes. My experience (Navy) was a 150% dynamic load test and a 200% static load test. It would be a shock to design for the rated load and have the thing tip over during annual testing.

Hope this helps.
