I was looking for a reality check on the specific gravity cited in the test results from a consolidation test (ASTM D-2435). The soil is a dark gray organic silt (OL), and was sampled from a project site in downtown Brooklyn, NY.

While my gut tells me the specific gravity could reasonable be anywhere between 2.65 to 2.73, the results indicate the spec. gravity to be 2.86. Has anyone ever encountered spec. gravities this high?

Yes. Astoria, (Queens), has similar heavy parent rock soil near Con Ed site. Could be imported from era when site was a Navy Yard.

Thanks for the input, but I was focusing more on the organic soils than bedrock.
