I would like to know why the possibility of putting nuclear waste into space and directing towards the sun has not been aired. The idea is not mine, admittedly the book it was mentioned in was fiction, but the solution seems very elegant.

1. Rockets crash. Since unplanned, could go anywhere.
2. Cost is roughly $13,000 per pound for putting something into space. If you should want to include a re-entry and crash proof cannister, the cost would be astronomical.
