I've dumped AutoDesk because the cost is simply not worth what you get. I would rather pay myself to do things by hand than pay AutoDesk $10,000 or whatever to do them for me. That said, I wouldn't mind finding a piece of simple, cheap software that can build surfaces, do cut/fill, and possibly run road templates, in the style of Ye Olde Softdesk 8. I don't really need any other functionality than that.

I'm currently using Bricscad, which is fantastic, light, stable, and runs wonderfully. I'd like to stick to this cad software if possible.

Ideas?

Stick with it - then. What is your question??

I like TurboCad (love it) - could teach you in ten minutes how to use it. You can download a "free" copy from them or buy an old copy on E-bay - not sure that is legal - but some are still in cellophane - so I would assume this is OK??

But I still LOVE version 11 - and they are on V18 now. Does what I need.

I think Bricscad has some 'add-ons' that may be able to help... I've not used them and cannot offer a suggestion. They have a portion of their site dedicated to these programs with a brief description.

I keep plugging Bricscad because it is one of the half dozen programs I use that I really like... I have no connection to the company.

Received a reply from Bricsys you can look into...

...we have Geo-Plus, a nice Civil Engineering and Surveyor applications that works well with Bricscad V12. Other applications are available from Geo-Tools at very reasonnable price. All these applications are listed in our application catalog.

Yeah, I stumbled into their add-ons section and browsed them. Many are foreign language only, and some are very expensive ($2k+) which defeats the purpose of using Bricscad for me, but if you sort through them there's a few that met my needs. I got FlashMNT for somewhere around $300, and it does DTMs, 3d polylines, cut/fill, and some other stuff. The routines are simple, clean, and don't crash. Everything's stored in the drawing instead of a secondary database, and the layers/etc are easy to set up. Totally worth the cost.

And yes, Bricscad is a fantastic program. It's identical to AutoCAD in every way that season ACAD users need it to be, but cleaner, faster, doesn't crash, not a memory hog, etc. Big fan.
