Will Sodium Hypochlorite increase Conductivity in cooling towers? Or is there anything in its make up that will contribute to conductivty?

Of course NaOCl contribute to conductivity.
All kind of salts do.

If you want to lower conductivity, we need to make deionization.

Any salt in the make-up will contribute.
But, if the hypoclorite you are referring is being added as a biocide, the amount added is normally low enough and wont affect conductivity. But...
If you have in your cooling tower a continuous adition of an acid (normally sulfuric or hydrocloric) as an automatic pH adjustment, as the NaClO is caustic, the H2SO4 or HCl dosing will increase, increasing the conductivity.
So, I recommend that you must make your own experience.
Other interesting facts:
* If as a biocide you add gaseous chlorine, instead of NaOCl, pH will drop, and it is recommendable to stop the addition of any acid used to control the pH during the injection, normally done in shocks.
* Back to conductivity, its continuous measurement would be a good variable to evaluate concentration cycles. A general (cautioun anyway) rule of thumb is that the total amount of salts in ppm is half the conductivity in microsiemens.
Have a safe day

Industrial strength hypochlorite is 10-15% NaOCl. It is also 10-15% NaCl. One method of manufacuring it is to bubble Cl2(gas) through a caustic solution to yield NaOCl and NaCl. Eventually the NaOCl will degrade to NaCl, either in storage or after application. So you will increase the conductivity of the recirculating water.

Are you continously chlorinating or shock feeding it? There is a considerable difference in the amount of NaOCl used by continuous chlorination over shock feeding it. A carefully designed and operated shock feed operation can achieve equal bio control as a continuous feed system.

cup3bead Thanks for the comments and to the rest of your. We are continues feeding the solution. Which is control by the trasar system which tries to maintain about 215 mv on the trasar unit or .25 to .5 ppm.
