I use smaw welding vertical down. The molten metal run ahead of the welding stick, what should i do?
Thank you for reply.

Check your electrode angle and travel speed.

Agree with Metengr and also, for lo hydro electrodes try E7048

I assume you are talking about welding sheet metal. In almost all other applications SMAW is welded vertical up to ensure maximum penetration.

What welding rod are you using and on what material?
Not all welding rods are designed to run down hill...

mikeeggs, there are hundreds of tons of rods burned every week, downhill in pressure piping.
Cross country mainlines, station work, distribution systems and gathering systems are all welded downhill in the U.S.

JTMcC.

Your travel speed must be fast enough to stay ahead or on the near leading edge of the puddle.

As with many welding techniques, practice is the key. Try adjusting rod angle, travel speed, voltage/arc force etc.

Though the direction of travel is frowned upon by many it sure is used a great deal in some industries. It is even allowed by D1.1 but has controls that must be followed.
