Hi, I am looking for a little electromagnetic advice...The devices Im working on are essentially self switching electromagnetic circuits(similar to the old doorbells only beefier hardware). Currently I use 5/16 x 1" 1018 mild steel cores with 8 layers of 25awg essex wire...these are wire in series and pull and armature/flat spring setup which disconnects at contact point and starts cycle over again. This device runs at about 115-140 cycles per second at approximately 6-7volts dc. The armature and yoke are also 1018 steel. There is also a 47umf axial capacitor between the outside coil leads to reduce spark at the contact.
What Im wondering is if 1018 is the ideal material for this circuit in terms of machinability, cost, as well as magnetic permeability? Should I be either pushing towards a softer metal or heat treating these parts in some way to make them act more like iron which seems to be known for having a high permeability? The ideal is to mke the circuit more efficient so that it does the same amount of work with less voltage and no heat.
Thanks for any opinions on this matter.

Transformer plate is what comes to mind. Right characteristics, easily handled, nice price, available everywhere.

Im not sure what that is or where to get it. Any leads for me?

What I mean is the silicon steel plate used as lamination in transformers. It is a commodity that you can buy in any country. Comes in different shapes, E, I, U, M and so on. What you probably need are I shaped plates.

Some suppliers here. More can easily be found by googling.
