Is there an industry standard for welding a carbon steel slip on flange B16.5 to carbon steel pipe, STD weight? What, if any, specification or code describes this? I understand that typically these are fillet welds, one outside of the pipe to the back edge of flange, and one inside between the end of the pipe to the inside face of flange. Piping designers I've talked to say they never specify this, it just shows up in the field welded together. Help is appreciated.

There is no reference to weld detail for SO flanges in ASME B16.5.

The fillet weld leg length should normally be the same as the pipe wall thickness, on both faces of the flange.

Stl63,

What is the code of construction?

For ASME B31.3, see Fig. 328.5.2B
For ASME B31.1, see Fig. 127.4.4(B)
