I'm designing a complex steel truss using 12" diam. pipe and would like to know if anyone has seen\used a "sliding" backing ring detail?
We'd like to use this for field welding splices between large subassemblies. The subassemblies have multiple pipes meeting at the splice at different angles, such that they won't fit-up if we use a conventional backing ring that protrudes out the end of the pipes.
The client very much desires prequalified welds, which is why I'm trying so hard to use backing. This is a D1.1 project.
