I'm designing a complex steel truss using 12" diam. pipe and would like to know if anyone has seen\used a "sliding" backing ring detail?
We'd like to use this for field welding splices between large subassemblies. The subassemblies have multiple pipes meeting at the splice at different angles, such that they won't fit-up if we use a conventional backing ring that protrudes out the end of the pipes.
The client very much desires prequalified welds, which is why I'm trying so hard to use backing. This is a D1.1 project.

If you are talking about T, Y, or K connections, take a look at D1.1 figure 3.8 through 3.10. You may find that your connection would not require conventional backing, but can use a back up weld and still be a prequalified connection.

Thanks, but it's actually the butt-welded splice of the main members that I'm trying to solve.
