AISC says that "through-plate connections should be used when the HSS wall is classified as a slender element". I understand that this applies to single plate shear connections and when you have to go to a through plate. Does the slenderness limit apply to other types of HSS connections, such as seated or single angle connections? I would think that it would not apply but I do not see it clearly stated one way or the other.
And what if the loads are very small? I see that the AISC uses the phrase "should be used". I have some small beams framing into a 12x12x0.25 and it seems overly penal to go to a through plate when the load might be just 5 or 10 kips. A single angle might be the ticket as long as it can be used with the slender wall.
