Skeletons

I think skeletons would be the best choice to set up
complex geometry. I have gone through a tutorial but there
seems to be a lot of steps to set up even a basic skeleton.

Can I import a 3d autocad model, use it for a skeleton and
either put it on a different layer or discard it?

Skeleton is not a feature, best would be to say - it is the philosophy of managing the assembly or model(vide horizontal modeling).

so, if you what to control your asembly by 3D autocad model - there is no problem.
