I am designing a footing to support a shade structure that is a single post sitting on a pedestal and footing. I know that for foundations supporting wood structures or near wood siding (mostly residential), the height of the foundation wall above finished grade shall be 8" to prevent termites, etc. My project is commercial and is supporting a steel pipe post. Do I need to extend my pedestal above grade at all? The IBC 2009 Sec. 1808.7.4 states that the top of any exterior foundation shall extend above the elevation of the street gutter at point of discharge or the inlet of an approved drainage device a minimum of 12 inches plus 2 percent. One of these footings is on relatively flat grade and the other is located were grade is sloping considerably. However, both footings are located where grade is more than 12" above the adjacent parking lot. So do I need to go above grade at all? The pipe stem is stated to be "waterproof" and is designed by the shade structure manufacturer (as well as the base plate).
