API 650 doesn't cover horizontal tanks or tanks with cone bottoms as i understand.

question 1: what code does?
question 2: any special reason why it doesn't go ahead and cover these other tank designs

A1. AWWA D100 or API-620 or ASME VIII
A2. Have you even bothered to read the scope of API-650? There is no need for API-650 to address these tanks. They are covered elsewhere.

Horizontal tanks for petroleum storage are usually built to UL specifications. Cone bottom oil tanks are just not that common. People use API-650 for everything from molasses to molten sulfur, but it's intended for the petroleum industry, and the scope is set accordingly.

Why do you need a cone bottom?
Does it have to be Cone or can it just slope?

no tanks, yet.... i just got started studying for the march API 653 test. my background is in welding and UT for structural steel. i figured 650 would be more comprehensive. i just bought all the recommended references for the test and was disappointed that none of them covered horizontal tanks or cone-bottomed tanks. Large tank farms for big oil might be mostly 650 tanks, but for many industrial plants a wide variety of tank configurations are present on-site. i would have thought 653 would require someone to have all the tools to look at these other tank configurations.
