I am looking for a compact and portable tester which can be used to analyze hydraulic fluids for trace qty of silver (less than 1 ppm). Does such a device exist? ideally it would not utilize a radiation source.
Is FT-IR a possibility?
Thanks for any direction you may advise.

I think this is about as close as you can get to portable, outside the lab type instrument. We use Ion Specific Electrodes in several areas removed from the central lab.
The total instrument isn't very big. I imagine they have some a lot smaller than the ones I'm familiar with.

Here is one producer of Ion Specific Electrodes that is capable of measuring Ag ions in low concentrations. Like most analytical procedures it is going to require a little sample preparation.
If you don’t have a analytical chemical type at your place I would give some of the major oil testing companies a call.

I would check with these people and several others in the business about your problem.

Thanks Unclesyd,
I called them right away and they may be a winner!
