I am looking for a compact and portable tester which can be used to analyze hydraulic fluids for trace qty of silver (less than 1 ppm). Does such a device exist? ideally it would not utilize a radiation source.
Is FT-IR a possibility?
Thanks for any direction you may advise.

At that trace element level it seems that a portable instrument would not be found.
You might ask a well equipped Lab. for test quotes and inquire on the methods proposed (Probably Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry or ICP - Induction coupled Plasma).
Or you might ask equipment manufacturers (Perkin-Elmer etc.) what they would offer to you.
