Shell and Tube Exchanger Tube Lenght To Shell Diameter

Can anyone suggest the maximum tube length to shell diameter ratio that would make bundle handling difficult from the bundle being "too springy"? I have seen a number of 15:1, am wondering if anything higher is unreasonable. Thanks.

This is an interesting question, but your answer would depend somewhat on the method of support for a removable bundle. A tube bundle could be removed and supported by several slings extending from a long "strongback (lifting beam)

I suggest that the maximum shell lentgh to diameter ratio be controlled by a reasonable pressure drop through the unit (typically 10 psid for the shell or tube side). This psid maximum limits your dimension ratio to about 8 to 10 in most cases.

We have used bundles 15 ins dia by 36 ft long and 18 ins dia by 40 ft long for high pressure applications without any problems
