sheet metal & iparts

I am using IV 2009. I made an ipart ofsheet metal. Why don't the sheet metal extents (ie. length & width)change from part to part? I could overtype the value in the cell but the cell, the part, and the parts list will not be associative. What must I do to fix this problem?
