Does anyone know how to calculate the shear capacity of an irregular section? I am designing to AS3600 but would like to know other design methods to different codes as well. The irregular one I am currently dealing with is very close to a quarter of a circular column.
Thank you.

1) I know that we've certainly dealt with whole circles here although I don't recall the outcome.

2) I'd be inclined to just go with the square that fits within your quarter circle as a reasonable approximation. If there's a shortfall in capacity, make it up in the ties which may well be square anyhow.

I'd fit a rectangle (or circle) inside the section and use that.

In AS3600 you can use the circle diameter as your shear width, which would imply a 300 diameter circle has the same concrete shear capacity as a 300x300 square section? That seems a bit weird...

Tomfh, the (old?) ACI procedure would allow column diameter as shear width, but takes 0.8*diameter as shear depth. Perhaps AS3600 does the same?
