Do we have to purchase Microsoft Sharepoint Portal Server to use Inight Connect - or can we just use Sharepoint services on Server 2003?

Search for the "sespimpgde.html" help file in your Solid Edge program directory. According to this help file you can use Sharepoint services which come with Server 2003. There is also some other very important information in this help file regarding Insight.

Solid Edge V18 SP5 on WinXP SP2
