Can someone explain what shadow shots are and where they would be useful?

If you are talking about a paralax shot where a defect is shot from two positions on the same shot. It is used for depth of defect location.

Concur with ledon. However, if available, UT-shearwave is faster - thus cheaper - and more accurate as to the upper limit and the max depth of the flaw.

A parralax shot is used to locate the depth of a defect in thicker materials. You would shoot the RT at 1/2 time, reposition the source and complete the shot. This produces two shadows at different positions on the film. A little trigonometry and you have a depth location.

This is rarely used anymore for the reasons Duwe6 mentioned.

"shadow Shots" usually refers to profile radiography which is usefull in piping up to 10" NPS for corrosion /damage assessment and can be done without removing insulation.
