I need a sensor to detect a change of direction in a rotating shaft. When the sensor detects the sudden change in direction it would trigger action of an electromagnet. The sensor would monitor either the shaft or a disk attached. A 12 volt dc power source would be used in the circuity.

Two pulses from the shaft, 90 degrees apart. In one direction pulse A leads pulse B, in the other direction the reverse is true. A simple bit of cookbook logic will determine the direction from the pulses.

Same as Scotty, except why limit yourself to two pulse per rotation?

Using the basic of encoders, have dozens / hundreds / thousands of pulses per rotation (with the same two-phase approach). More pulses per shaft rotation will speed the reaction time (if required).

I'm meeting the spec!! [tongue]

Customer-written specs are ALWAYS incomplete, inaccurate, and sometimes completely impossible. ;-)
